How to Have an Amazing August in E1…

Our top things to do in East London this month, whatever the weather.

Why get out of town, when you can get involved with all that our patch of East London has to offer? Here’s our guide to top things to do in E1 this August.

Spitalfields City Farm

Animals-lovers, young and old, can take advantage of the verdant community space that is Spitalfields City Farm this summer. Open six days a week Tuesday to Sunday, it’s free to enter, and home to an array of farmyard animals, a Wildlife Garden, Plant Nursery and Vegetable Beds.  Throughout August they are offering special child-focused sessions looking at ‘Farm 2 Fork’, a chance to harvest food from the farm and learn to cook pizza, pasta and pesto, and ‘Forage and Feed’, where they can discover which plants the animals like to eat and feed them with a farmer.

Walk & Draw Spitalfields

On Saturday 17th August, explore the historic streets of Spitalfields and their Huguenot heritage, as you Walk & Draw with art tutor Piero D’Angelo. This two-hour session, starting at the iconic Christ Church Spitalfields, will take in the houses of Fournier, Princelet and Wilkes Streets, allowing you to capture the area with the guidance of Piero and all materials provided.

Dot Kids Art Workshops

Children aged 5 – 16 can unleash their creative talents on the Old Spitalfields Market Mezzanine in a series of summer holiday workshops with Dot Kids. With two sessions taking place every Tuesday, each will focus on a revered artist, from Matisse to Frida Khalo. They will learn about the artist’s unique style before creating their own artwork inspired by their work, to take home and keep.

London Dessert Festival

If you’re eating lunch in The Kitchens on Saturday 17th or Sunday 18th August, we know a great place to grab some pudding… Head over to our neighbours, The Old Truman Brewery, for the London Dessert Festival. Promising a “celebration of London’s dessert community, set to enthrall and bewilder, as creativity, innovation and originality collide”, it’s safe to say, you might need to pack some bigger trousers to make your way home in.

Street Art Tour

East London’s street art scene is one of the world’s most exciting.  Why not explore the newest and best examples of the neighbourhood’s graffiti with free group walks from Strawberry Tours? They will take you around all the most thought-provoking (and highly instgrammable) pieces, as well as telling you a bit about the area’s art culture. These daily tours can be booked in advance on their website.

Workshops on the Mezzanine

Don’t let the kids have all the fun this summer… on our Old Spitalfields Market Mezzanine, you’ll also find some inspiring workshops for grown-ups too. Carve your own silver ring on Thursday 1st August with Work Bench London, or sign up for some ‘Retrosketch’ on Thursday 8th August for the ’80s B*tches!’ workshop with Sketch Appeal.

Whitechapel Gallery

With its stunning period exterior and a reputation for contemporary art, the Whitechapel Gallery is always a good E1 destination. Be sure to visit before August 25th to experience their critically-acclaimed exhibition from American-Iraqi artist Michael Rakowitz. Sculptor, detective and occasional chef, he takes his cue from historic buildings and artefacts to create enthralling environments, such as ‘Dull Roar’, a inflatable tower block inspired by a 1950s high rise estate in Missouri that aspired to end poverty but ended in demolition.

Curzon Aldgate

Whether you are escaping extreme heat, torrential rain, or just a bog-standard grey London sky, some days are just better sat out in the cinema. Fortunately, we don’t have to wander far from the Market to reach Curzon Aldgate. This stylish four-screen affair with plush reclining and double seats, is the perfect place to see out a storm and watch new releases, including August’s hotly-anticipated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Ours is a large popcorn…
